  3. Red: A vibrant red is used to accentuate certain elements within the pattern, adding a pop of color.
  4. Black: Black is used for outlining shapes and creating sharper contrasts.

How Handmade Kilims Are Typically Made

Kilims are a type of flat-woven rug, meaning they lack the knotted pile found in traditional rugs. Here’s a general overview of their creation process:

  1. Design: The design is conceived by the weaver or a designer. It often incorporates geometric motifs and patterns inspired by local traditions and culture.
  2. Warping: The warp threads, which run lengthwise, are stretched onto a loom.
  3. Wefting: The weft threads, which run widthwise, are interlaced with the warp threads using various techniques. In kilim weaving, the weft threads are often passed over and under the warp threads, creating a flat surface.
  4. Dyeing: The wool or other natural fibers used for the kilim are dyed with natural or synthetic dyes.
  5. Weaving: The weaver carefully interlaces the weft threads with the warp threads, following the design and creating the desired pattern.
  6. Finishing: Once the weaving is complete, the kilim is trimmed, washed, and finished to remove any loose threads and give it a polished appearance.
